Who should attend Chess Club and why?
Beginners through advanced players are welcome at Chess Club!
Make new friends while learning chess skills and practicing together each week. Chess has been proven to improve focus and critical thinking! In our classroom, chess is also a fun game where we build confidence, socialize, and practice sportsmanship.
What will students learn in Chess Club?
We will adjust each Chess Club to the students who attend to make sure all players learn! Beginners will learn chess fundamentals from castling to checkmate. We will learn tactics and checkmate patterns to build confidence finishing a game. We may even learn advanced tournament skills while learning from famous chess games!

Curiosity Club - S.T.E.A.M. powered weekly sessions. Join us in weekly exploration of the curious worlds of science, technology, engineering, art and math with fun (and sometimes messy!) projects aligned with grade level academics and common core standards. You will conduct experiments, build, take apart, create and see how art, science and technology are connected. Having fun with S.T.E.A.M. subjects fosters lifelong appreciation and curiosity for learning.
Smart with Art - Queens of Art!

Discover art techniques while incorporating high quality art mediums in this exciting new session! Learn historical art facts about women in art. Create a relief sculpture as we consider the work of Louise Nevelson. Express the idea of family through creating a memory quilt in the style of Faith Ringgold. This session is full of exploration, discovery and creativity. Get ready for fun and discover the fantastic lives of the Queens of Art! And, as always, Dress for Mess!
Miss Li - Chinese Culture and Language Class
Fridays at West Mercer elementary from 3:45pm - 5:00pm
Winter session: Jan 10 - Mar 21
No class Feb 21 (mid-winter break) and Mar 14 (teacher training day)

Miss Li's Chinese Language and Culture Class introduces the kids on the Chinese language through various fun teaching activities.
1) learn and practice how to speak the common daily sentences in Chinese;
2) introduce the Chinese characters and sentences, learn to read, write, and speak , and practice through games, story-telling, or calligraphy;
3) introduce the Chinese traditional culture and events (like why we have red packet and dragon dance in Chinese New Year, why we eat Zongzi in Dragon Boat Festival, etc). Students will learn through fun activities like paper cutting, folk songs/poems appreciation, etc.
Mathnasium - Math Enrichment Program
Thursdays at West Mercer elementary from 4:00pm - 5:00pm

We make math make sense in a fun environment! We meet each student where they are mathematically, whether behind or ahead. It starts with an individual assessment of each student and individualized learning plans to move them forward.

What would happen if Cinderella met the Big, Bad, Wolf? What if the Gingerbread Man ate up the Three Bear’s porridge? Anything can happen, and probably will, in Fractured Fairytales! Students will use characters, plots, and settings from traditional fairytales to create “fractured” versions with their own spins on these classic stories. Brought to you by Youth Theatre Northwest, providing quality arts education to the King County area since 1984.
