DEI Updates September 2022
9/26/2022 1:23 pm
Saturday, October 22 I 5pm
RSVP by October 5
There are only a few days left to RSVP (by October 5) for the Voices Heard event. Please join us on October 22 at 5pm for an evening of community building and fun with other AAPI families of MISD! All families are welcome to this community organized event. Please note that this is an adult only event and is not a fundraising event.
The goal of the evening is to engage and connect the AAPI community on Mercer Island with the ongoing and future work of MISD. It will be a time for our administrators to better understand the AAPI community, and for the AAPI community to gain a deeper understanding of the educational approach of MISD.
The event will feature a traditional Chinese banquet dinner, music, a keynote from Superintendent Fred Rundle, interviews with various community members and groups, and other programming.
For questions, contact voicesheardmi@gmail.com.
In celebration of the histories and contributions of historically marginalized identities, WM PTSA DEI commemorates heritage months and identity acknowledgements throughout the school year with this calendar.
These recognitions are an opportunity for us to learn more about the diversity of our communities and provide resources for families.
In addition, MISD and MIEA sent a “Joint Commitment to Intentional Recognition of Religious Holidays and Traditions” to families on September 19.
See the full calendar here.
More information about our communications and events for each month will be provided in upcoming Wolf newsletters. Please contact diversity@westmercerpta.org if you have questions.
Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, begins September 25 at sundown and concludes at nightfall on September 27 this year. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, begins October 4 at sundown and concludes at nightfall on October 5. Together, these are referred to as the High Holidays.
The High Holidays are very important holidays in the Jewish calendar and filled with customs and traditions.
Here are some ways you can celebrate or learn more about the High Holidays:
- Visit local community festivals and learn about annual Jewish observances throughout the year.
- Read these suggested children’s books.
- Check out this guide to the Jewish New Year from PJ Library
- More kid-friendly crafts, recipes and stories can be found here.
For more information or questions about the Jewish High Holidays, contact Darren Gold.
As we continue to recognize and celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), here are some examples of how West Mercer is recognizing and celebrating the many achievements, contributions and histories of our American Latinx and Hispanic communities.
- As mentioned in the Hispanic Heritage Month Message From Superintendent Rundle (mercerislandschools.org), third graders are using the “On This Day” learning series, “On This Day: Hispanic History” slide deck, which highlights and recognizes significant events and people in Hispanic and Latinx history.
- Fifth graders are writing short biographies of famous Hispanic and Latinx Americans, which will be displayed in the hallway, so West Mercer wolves can see these biographies and portraits while walking down the hall.
Here are some ways to celebrate and recognize Hispanic Heritage Month with your family:
- Read these suggested children’s books from The Conscious Kid and Scholastic books celebrating Hispanic and Latinx voices.
- Attend some community events, such as the Mexam NW Festival (September 10-October 15) at a variety of locations.
- Visit here for more kid-friendly tips, crafts, recipes and books to celebrate Hispanic heritage all year.
