Celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month

West Mercer Library Jewish American Heritage Month Displays

May is Jewish American Heritage Month, where we celebrate the enduring heritage of Jewish Americans, whose values, culture, and contributions have shaped our character as a Nation, as noted in the Presidential Proclamation here

The Jewish identity goes beyond religious faith.  Many Jewish people share a common culture, nationality, ethnicity and history, as well as religion.

During this month, we pay tribute to the generations of Jewish Americans who helped form the fabric of American history, culture and society, as noted in the Library of Congress here

Jewish on Mercer Island (JOMI) PTA Affinity group has brought a collection of children's books that showcase Jewish culture to share with our library.  There is currently Jewish American Heritage Month displays in the library during the month of May (see pictures above).

Your student can check out the books provided by JOMI in the library or you can find some suggestions here

If you would like to learn more about JOMI, please contact jomi98040@outlook.com.

Did you know?  Jewish Americans have changed American history, and made lasting contributions in Science and Innovation (Albert Einstein, Milton Friedman, Levi Strauss, Abraham Maslow, Sergey Brin, Mark Zuckerberg); Popular Culture (Jerry Seinfeld, Barbara Streisand, Steven Spielberg, Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Stewart); World Politics (Henry Kissinger, Madeleine Albright); Art and Architecture (Marvin Hamlisch, Frank Gehry).
